Subway ran a trial for a new sandwich that includes vegan meatballs earlier this year in August at select restaurants in Canada, USA, and in other international locations. This temporary trial addition to their menu included meatballs and marinara sauce in their sandwich, with cheese included (if you are not ordering it vegan). It sounds as though the trial was a success.
Canadians linked to the restaurant chain are reporting that the official “soft” roll out to remaining restaurants was to be complete today: “the soft launch started today with in-store marketing only. Next week they will start to really advertise it.” Despite the soft launch, some customers have noted delays: “I just called a location near me in Milton, Ontario and they said they have it but some other locations are starting January 6 according to the employee.”
Customers in other countries are also finding the sandwich now available at their local restaurants.

The Subway Beyond Meatball Marinara sub includes meatballs designed by a joint effort between Beyond Meat and Subway. It combines the pea-protein based “meat” with breadcrumbs to create a unique and very meat-like blend. Some people describe it as being nearly identical to the non-vegan meatball sub. This Beyond Meatball is only available at Subway (that we are aware of at the time of writing).
These subs are not targeted at plant-based diet and vegan customers, but instead flexitarians. Inquire about your locations condiment and cheese options if you are ordering the sandwich vegan.
The Beyond Meatball sub is being released in most remaining locations in Canada and internationally in late December 2019 and early January 2020, although some locations expect to receive the vegan meatballs after this date.
Note that even when ordering the vegan version of this sub, the ingredients within this sub could come in contact with animal proteins (however, this cross contamination possibility doesn’t make it non-vegan of course – just up to personal choice).
They also have other vegan options at their restaurants. Our region includes a couple soups, some sauces, bread options, and more. Not all bread is vegan, so you do need to ask at the location or look online first for what you can order. For a detailed listing for your region, search for: your country name Subway nutritional facts. Full ingredient listings are available for each item.
Subway isn’t new to offering vegan options. In 2012, Subway introduced a Totally Vegged patty – a newer vegan version of a vegetarian version they offered earlier.
